Matt's 1st Father's Day weekend!

Well as I'm sure you all have heard... Matt and I had an unexpected trip to the emergency room Friday night (June 15th). Matt and I were at a John Major concert and were having a good time, when Matt started having sharp pains in his side, and the both of us just assumed it was something he ate. But as the night progressed the pains just got worse. So as John was singing his last song Matt and I decided to leave the concert and get home to Jackson and head out to the E.R. But before we went to the hospital we had some great friends give Matt a blessing, which was a HUGE comfort to the both of us.

Once we got the ER they had Matt give blood and run some tests, he then had a CAT scan. About an hour later the Doctor came in & said that he had appendicitis, and that they were going to get him on the list to get into surgery first thing in the morning. Jackson and I decided to go home and get some sleep before returning back to the hospital.

At about 7:00 am we got a call from Matt saying that he was heading into surgery and that he should okay for visitors at about 9:30 am. Jackson and I arrived at the hospital at about 10:00 am and the nurse said that they had been looking for me. She then proceeds to tell me that when they went in they found something else wrong and had to take care of it, so he was still in surgery. They didn't tell me anything else, but to go wait to see Dr. Hess when he was done with the surgery. So as Jackson & I waited in the waiting room, about 30 minutes later he came out and said that they had found a mass growing on his colon and had to remove it. So they had to completely cut him open and finish the surgery. So now he will be in the hospital for at least 3-4 days, and could be longer. Then he continues to tell me that the pathologists don't come in till Monday, and we won't find out the results for a few days. But he was also able to tell me that we are lucky they found it when they did because he thinks they got ALL of it. He said it looked like it was in the early stages and that it was all removed from what he could tell.

Now that Matt has come out of sedation he is feeling so much better. He is still having quite a bit of pain, but he does have 23 staples from surgery. He has been able to walk around the halls and use the restroom on his own too. Just yesterday (June 18th) they were able to okay him to eat some food, which totally made Matt's day! We still haven't heard anything back from the lab, but are still hopefull that they got everything. So please continue the prayers for the Shirley family! We love you all!
